Texas Trust Credit Union and San Angelo READS! Celebrate Fourth-Grade Book Giveaway

Texas Trust Credit Union, San Angelo READS! and fourth-grade students at Bowie Elementary recently came together to celebrate literacy through a special read-aloud and book giveaway event. Texas Trust Vice President for West Texas Brett Nikolauk and Branch Manager Leti Ramirez read from “Out of Wonder” by Kwame Alexander, sharing the power of poetry and storytelling with students.

"Out of Wonder" is a collection of poems that pays tribute to 20 influential poets, written in each poet’s unique style. Illustrated by Ekua Holmes, the book celebrates creativity, expression and the lasting impact of poetry, with biographical information about each poet included at the end.

Through the generosity of a $10,155.45 grant from the Texas Trust Gives Foundation, every fourth-grade student in San Angelo ISD received a personal copy of the book to take home and enjoy. The grant also allowed San Angelo READS! to purchase fiction and nonfiction book bundles in English and Spanish from Scholastic, which will be distributed free of charge throughout the year at district and community events.

“Partnerships like this allow us to place meaningful books directly into the hands of our students while reinforcing the joy of reading beyond the classroom,” said Sun Cha, SAISD Director of Community Relations. “When students have access to books they can call their own, literacy becomes personal, empowering and lasting. We are incredibly grateful to Texas Trust Credit Union and the Texas Trust Gives Foundation for investing in our students and supporting the mission of San Angelo READS!.”

With the support of organizations and businesses like Texas Trust Credit Union and the Texas Trust Gives Foundation, San Angelo READS! continues to raise awareness of the importance of literacy and inspire students to develop a lifelong love of reading. San Angelo ISD is grateful for the ongoing partnership and commitment to public education shown by Texas Trust Gives Foundation and our local Texas Trust Credit Union branches.

About San Angelo READS!

The San Angelo READS! community-wide literacy initiative was founded by the District in 2020 to promote and encourage reading and the SAISD future-ready learner profile attributes among SAISD students and the greater San Angelo community. The goal of the literacy initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of literacy and to inspire a love for reading. This exciting initiative is driven by statistics which show how vitally important literacy is in providing all students with the opportunities to succeed at a young age. Children and teenagers who read for pleasure on a daily or weekly basis score better on reading and writing tests than infrequent or non-readers.

SAISD kicked off San Angelo READS! on December 9, 2020 with the inaugural San Angelo Reads! Day, a day when literacy was celebrated at every SAISD elementary campus with literacy fun like read-ins, unveiling book vending machines and a gift of a book to all SAISD third-graders compliments of the San Angelo Area Foundation. Inside and outside our classrooms, SAISD is committed to building literacy skills which create students who are prepared for future success, thus building a better tomorrow for our students and community.
