Central High School Seniors Discover Post-Graduation Opportunities through Senior Day

Almost 1,000 Central High School seniors had the opportunity to explore post-graduation opportunities during Central High School’s annual Senior Day career fair, Thursday, November 9. More than 71 businesses, organizations, colleges, universities and technical schools gathered in the gym to speak to students about career, educational and volunteer opportunities. 

Many colleges and universities participated in Senior Day, providing students with information about available programs, academics, financial aid and more including: Angelo State University, Howard College, Texas School of Cosmetology, Texas Tech University, Texas A&M University, Lubbock Christian University and McMurry University. Local businesses also participated offering students information about careers available here in the Concho Valley including: Shannon Health, KLST, Caliber Collision, Asco Steel, Concho Valley Electric Cooperative, City of San Angelo, San Angelo Fire Department and the San Angelo Police Department. Other businesses and organizations that participated included: National Weather Service, United States Department of Agriculture, Texas Department of Transportation, Department of Public Safety, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Texas Game Wardens and the different branches of the US military.

The career fair is designed as another way for San Angelo ISD students to be “future-ready” and explore post-secondary opportunities they might not know about. CHS English teacher, TexAnn sponsor and Career Fair organizer, Kelly Wilson, said the career fair, now in its sixth year, has expanded beyond educational and career opportunities by also providing students information about volunteer opportunities or summer job openings. 

“What we see here today is not what I thought in the beginning when I started this,” she said. “There are also kids here that aren’t just looking for a forever career, there are kids who are also looking for summer jobs and volunteer opportunities. For example, Fort Concho, that’s one of their main objectives today is to get volunteers. There are tons of things that kids can find here today.” 

During Senior Day, students also had the opportunity to complete CPR training, a graduation requirement for all Texas high-school students. SAISD is committed to our mission of engaging all students in a relevant and inspiring education that produces future-ready graduates, and proud that many of our graduates go on to work important roles right here in San Angelo, contributing to the current and future success of our community. We appreciate the community partners who participated in Senior Day and helped provide our students this additional opportunity to pursue their own hopes and dreams.
