Boys advance to region

SA Times - Bobby Hawes and Ethan Flores finished first and fourth, respectively, leading the Central High School boys cross country team to a second-place showing at the District 3-5A meet Thursday at the UT-Permian Basin Park in Odessa.

On the girls' side, Central placed fourth in the team standings. The Bobcats swept the boys and girls team titles last year, but only the boys team advances to the Region I-5A meet Nov. 3 in Lubbock.

Odessa High won the boys title with 48 points, 13 points ahead of the Bobcats. Hawes ran a time of 15 minutes, 39.9 seconds, and Flores turned in a 16:32.7 clocking.

Other Central finishers included: Kevin Barr (15th, 17:24.1); Michael Brothers (20th, 17:38.1); Raymond Lopez (21st, 17:44.7); Marcelino Santillan (29th, 18:18.2); and Kyler Bean (42nd, 19:41.7.)

Alyssa Priest's third-place finish (12:26.8) highlighted the Lady Cats' performances. Shelby Swartz was 11th (13:02.9), followed by Alyssa Clement (17th, 13:24.2); Bianca Rodriguez (19th, 13:28.2); Brianna Rodriguez (21st, 13:38.2); Jordan Boswell (25th, 14:00.0); and Bailee Sawyer (26th, 14:16.6.)

Odessa High completed a title sweep by taking the girls championship with 45 points, edging Abilene High by five points. Odessa Permian (57) was third, followed by Central (66).
