The Central High School girls basketball team hung tough with No. 9 Lubbock Coronado for a half before
dropping a 75-40 District 2-5A decision on the road Saturday. The Mustangs were clinging to a 30-17
halftime cushion before out-scoring the Lady Cats 45-23 the rest of the way.Central was led by
Mercedes Lopez, who knocked down six 3-pointers on her way to scoring 22 points. She was the only
Central player to score in double digits.Coronado improved to 14-2 overall and 4-0 in district, while
Central dropped to 7-8 and 2-2."We battled with them toe to toe," said Central coach Jan Wakefield,
whose team travels to Greenwood on Monday. "They were just more athletic than us."We would've
liked to have gotten to the free-throw line more. Being down only 13 at the half, we were taking it to them."
