Eight of the 15 players who suited up for the Central High School boys basketball team Tuesday night were playing strictly football just four days ago. It showed. With a roster full of new players trying to make the transition from making blocks to shooting jumpers, the Bobcats fell to Lubbock High 59-42. "We had two hours to work together before this," said Central's David Robinson, who wasn't on the football team and led the 'Cats in scoring with 14 points. "A couple of guys didn't even play basketball last year. It's going to take them a while to get into it." Robinson said Monday's first practice all together was an eventful one. "It was definitely interesting, a lot of airballs, a lot of guys just getting back into it," Robinson said. "That's OK. That how it's supposed to go." But Tuesday's game was not how it was supposed to go for the Bobcats. Central started the game well and led 10-9 after the first quarter, but it went downhill from there. LHS took a 13-12 lead on a Gabree Gibson jumper 5:42 into the second quarter, and the Westerners never trailed again. Gibson scored a team-high 26 points for Lubbock, which improved to 1-2. "He was everywhere on the court," Robinson said. "All the loose balls seemed to come his way, and he was hitting all his shots." The Bobcats (0-2) return to the court Friday when they play perennial South Plains power Lubbock Estacado in the first round of the Pampa tournament. |
