The Earth Club was established in 1997, it has been around for six years now and has accomplished very much in those years. The purpose of this club is to keep San Angelo cleaner and so recyclable items won’t go to waste. Also the true purpose would be to show special needs children to have better social skills, learn how to work as a group, how to keep on task and be responsible. The students working on this project get weekly paychecks for their work the higher responsibilities they obtain the more money they get, but it isn’t about the money but about responsibility and discipline. The Earth Club is run through Banneker by all of the teachers and teacher aides. Members of the club include all of Banneker’s students. The Earth Club does recycling, paper sorting, shredding, and have also planted some of the plants around campus. The locations they do recycling for are all grade schools, Junior Highs, ASU, Howard College, several government offices, the West Texas Training Center, libraries, A.G. Edwards, and all of Central High School. The students may shred important files of the government that can’t be read, they may tie boxes of cardboard together to be recycled, sort the paper into different stacks, and also collect all of these items from the locations listed on top. They then take the recyclable items to the recycle center on Knickerbocker. The Earth Club has won a couple of awards recently for their achievements, hard work and dedication. Also twice a year the Earth Club fixes thousands of goodie bags and flyers for Goodwill, to be mailed all over San Angelo. The Earth Club does a lot for Central High School and also for the community in San Angelo.
