Central ISD Career & Technology
*Career Preparation Co-ops

Program Areas
Central High School offers career preparation opportunities for juniors and seniors, who are at least sixteen years old on the first day of school, through co-operative training programs.

Scheduling Concerns

Students in each of these programs are enrolled in a related class which meets for one period. Each student is also employed in an occupation that is directly related to the classroom instruction. Students’ choice sheets must indicate one period for the career preparation (co-op) class and a minimum of two periods for the on-the-job training experience. With the successful completion of a Career Preparation Co-op students will earn three state credits.

Procedures for the Program

Students must work an average of fifteen hours per week at a wage rate equitable to other entry level employees in the workplace. Students are expected to be employed when school starts and to maintain the SAME employment all year. The teacher coordinator is the only one who can make exceptions to this rule. Failure to follow this rule could result in loss of all co-op credits. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the work site/training station. Maintaining good, regular attendance at both the high school and at the training station is essential for all students in career preparation co-ops.

Classroom Instruction
Classroom instruction is of two types: (1) Individualized study directly related to the occupational objective of each student, and (2) group instruction to orient and adjust students to employment conditions and to develop proper attitudes toward school, employment, social and civic responsibilities. Classroom instruction and practical on-the-job training include the latest information and skills for the career cluster. Teachers coordinate class activities with the training station sponsors, employers, or job supervisors to provide students opportunities to develop career related skills, knowledge, and attitudes.
